Meet Dr. Joel Powell

Joel E. Powell, DDS, MD, MSc, FRCD(C)

A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Dr. Joel Powell received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery training at Dalhousie University from 1994-1998, during which time he also completed his Bachelor degree in Computing Science (BSc). He then completed a one-year post-graduate General Practice Residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland where he gained experience in oral surgery, anaesthesia, and caring for medically compromised patients. Despite being offered a faculty position in Dentistry at Johns Hopkins, he decided to pursue a specialty career in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) and completed a one-year OMFS Internship at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in 2000 to gain a broad experience in the area prior to applying to post-doctoral residency programs.

Following this, Dr. Powell returned to Dalhousie University for his specialty training, where he completed the 6-year program in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, obtaining both a Masters degree (MSc) and a Doctorate of Medicine (MD). Upon completion, he pursued further advanced training and returned to Emory University and the Atlanta VA Medical Center in Atlanta for a Fellowship. Here he received advanced instruction and experience in all areas of general OMFS, with a special focus on implant therapy, facial cosmetic surgery, and maxillofacial trauma. Dr. Powell successfully completed the Royal College of Dentists of Canada Fellowship examinations in OMFS in 2006, is an active member in several national and international professional organizations related to his profession, and maintains active licensure in both Canada and the United States. He is very excited to have returned in 2007 to join OMS Consultants in his home province of Nova Scotia to contribute to the health and well being of the community.

Dr. Joel Powell has a professional interest in all areas of modern oral & maxillofacial surgery and plans on maintaining a full scope of practice. His current particular interests include functional and esthetic implant rehabilitation, facial cosmetic surgery, correction of oro-facial deformities, and the integration of advanced radiological and computerized methods into clinical practice. He wishes to be involved with teaching colleagues and trainees, both formally and informally, to contribute to the professional organizations related to his field, and to participate in clinical research to improve care and quality of life for all dental and oral & maxillofacial surgical patients. He is committed to a life-long process of continuing education in order to provide the most current care possible to his patients.

Dr. Powell is married with two young children. He lives in Halifax and enjoys playing hockey, golf, softball, mountain biking, aviation, travel and spending time with his family.
