BOTOXTM
BOTOXTM Cosmetic Injection for facial wrinkles is one of the most effective and common treatments in the field of cosmetic surgery. Very few treatments produce such impressive results with no healing time required.
What is BotoxTM?
BotoxTM Cosmetic is a protein produced from bacteria that has been purified for human use. It is a muscle weakener that temporarily binds to human muscles and decreases their activity. There are many medicinal as well as facial cosmetic uses for BotoxTM.
How and Why is BotoxTM Cosmetic Used?
A tiny amount of BotoxTM Cosmetic is injected into the muscle(s) that is responsible for a dynamic wrinkle (those caused by muscle contraction such as facial expression). Frown lines between the eyebrows and on the bridge of nose, also known as worry lines or scowl lines, and wrinkles on the forehead are the most commonly treated areas. BOTOXTM Cosmetic injections are also used for "crow's feet" wrinkles lateral to the eyes (most noticeable when squinting or smiling), and forehead wrinkles. Sometimes it is used in the neck region as well.
BotoxTM blocks the nerve impulse from reaching the muscle, and as a result, the muscle relaxes. As the muscle relaxes the dynamic wrinkle in the overlying skin is smoothed away.
BotoxTM can also used by to treat bruxism (tooth grinding) and some facial pain syndromes. Misalignment or spasm of the eyelids, hyperactive muscles, hyperhidrosis, and cerebral palsy in children are some of the other disorders that may be treated by qualified BotoxTM Cosmetic providers.
How is it Administered and What Can I Expect?
The injections are performed in the office with an ultra fine needle and the number of injections required varies with the degree of wrinkling. There is minimal discomfort in most patients. No sedation or local anesthetic is required, and you can resume normal activities immediately. Some patients experience a slight temporary bruising at the injection site. This can be covered with makeup. Many receive BOTOXTM Cosmetic injections on their lunch hour and return to work. The effects begin in 24-72 hours.
Does BotoxTM 'Freeze' my Face?
No. Unlike you sometimes see in Hollywood, if performed conservatively and properly, BotoxTM only relaxes the overactive muscles underneath the dynamic wrinkles and the other elements of facial expression remain unaffected. We aim for a natural, pleasing look.
Is BotoxTM Permanent?
No. The effects of BotoxTM Cosmetic usually last 3 to 4 months, at which time another injection is required to re-achieve the desired result. After several treatments, the effects of BotoxTM may begin to last longer.
Are BotoxTM Treatments Safe?
Yes. Botox has been approved by the Canadian government and has long been a trusted therapeutic choice for over 10 years. The most common side effects are temporary and localized to the area of injection.
Is This Treatment For Me?
There are very few restrictions regarding BotoxTM treatments. Patients who are pregnant, nursing or have neurologic diseases should not be treated. Patients should discuss with their surgeon if BotoxTM Cosmetic treatments are appropriate for them.
BOTOXTM Cosmetic is only useful in treating expression lines and cannot be used to repair sagging skin caused by aging. It is less effective in patients over 65 years of age.
